What Are Your Favorite Silent Hill Memories?

15 years ago today, Konami released Silent Hill. With nine games and two movies, the franchise has become a phenomenon that survival horror fanatics love to play when they're home alone. Originally released for the PlayStation, Silent Hill had you play as an "everyman" searching for his daughter through the fog-filled town of Silent Hill.

We asked fans what their favorite memories were and we started to remember why Silent Hill terrifies us.

A big ol' pile of NOPE

Nando P. - Watching Andrew DeSalvo's ghost cutscene in SH4 and then having to walk down that spiral staircase. My first NOPE in gaming.

Rodney M. - In Silent Hill 4, when you looked though the wall and that stuffed rabbit was pointing at you, man did that freak me out on some subconscious level. I had a pet rabbit at the time, and I refused to go near it for the next week

Rebecca S. - When you are in the hospital wing and you go into one of the patient rooms and there was a huge Lisa head starting at you.....super creepy, I jumped and threw the controller.

Matt B. - Silent Hill 2. Such an incredibly eerie and demonic feeling. But at the same time it was also weirdly blissful feeling. That game will always be my favorite survival horror ever. Also got the same feeling from Shattered Memories, which is a close second. In my restless dreams, I see that town...... silent Hill....... I LOVE YOU SILENT HILL!

Johnathan V. - Playing at 2am in the dark and having to turn it off because I'm a giant coward lol.

Luke F. - The first Silent Hill left permanent damage on my soul. That elementary school....

Trev M. - The nightmares.

What are your memories from the Silent Hill series? Did you quit playing the game for a month because you were too scared to go down that dark hallway in the elementary school? Are your worst nightmares products from Silent Hill's hospital? Let us know in the comments below!

Eriq Martin is IGN's Social Media Coordinator. He has a love-hate-love relationship with Silent Hill. He wants to thank Konami for his worst nightmares. Read about his life on his Twitter.

Disney Picks Up Chip 'n Dale Movie Pitch

Live-action/CGI hybrid movies aren't letting '80s animated series stay dead, as we've seen with Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Smurfs. Now, Disney has picked up a pitch from commercials director Robert Rugan for a film adaptation of Chip 'n Dale.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be produced by Mandeville Films/TV, which is responsible for The Muppets and the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted.

The film will reportedly be inspired by the 1989 animated incarnation of the characters, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The show took the decades-old characters and launched them into a detective agency that specialized in clients from the animal kingdom. The show ran for three years on The Disney Channel, along with the popular Duck Tales and its spin-off Darkwing Duck. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was recently revived as a comic book series from BOOM Studios.

Operating as an origin story, Chip 'n Dale has yet to be given a release date. You can bet the filmmakers aren't happy that the "Chipwrecked" pun is already a thing.

Stan Lee Previews His Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Cameo

Suffice to say, but any chance you have to hear the iconic voice of Stan Lee speaking to you is a good one. I had the opportunity to talk to the legendary comic book creator about his upcoming appearance on this coming Tuesday's episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In the episode, Lee will continue a tradition he's had for many years now, making a cameo in a Marvel-based property.

IGN TV: My first question with you appearing on S.H.I.E.L.D. is, what took so long?! Were you saying, "Hey, why am I not in the first episode of this show?"

Stan Lee: Oh, I like the way you think! I felt the same way. Why was it not called Stan Lee and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? [Laughs] No, I'm glad that they gave that one little cameo, though. It's a little bit longer than a cameo. It's almost a supporting role. Instead of the usual three or four or five seconds, I think this took almost half a minute.

Maurissa Tancharoen (executive producer), Stan Lee, Elizabeth Henstridge ("Agent Simmons") and Clark Gregg ("Agent Coulson') on the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Maurissa Tancharoen (executive producer), Stan Lee, Elizabeth Henstridge ("Agent Simmons") and Clark Gregg ("Agent Coulson') on the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

IGN: You were there for the beginning of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Lee: Well, I'm glad they invited me, because I did the first S.H.I.E.L.D. story in the comics with Jack Kirby. I love the whole concept of S.H.I.E.L.D.. I don't know if you'd remember, but years ago, there was a television show called The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and U.N.C.L.E. was a secret organization and so forth. I got the idea for S.H.I.E.L.D. from U.N.C.L.E.. I thought it'd be great to have an organization like that, but because we were doing comic books, I'd make it bigger and more colorful and more far out. We had a book called Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, which we stopped publishing after awhile. The fans would wonder, "What happened to Sgt. Fury? Where is he now?" So it occurred to me that if I did this group S.H.I.E.L.D., why not put Sergeant Fury at the head of it, except he'd now be a Colonel. So he'd be Colonel Fury and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. -- and that's how it all started. I loved the idea, and I'm so glad that it's a TV series. As it moves along, I hope it just gets wilder and wilder.

IGN: So can you say anything about what part you play on the episode?

Lee: Yeah, I play a guy sitting on a train, and I see Agent Coulson arguing with Elizabeth Henstridge [Agent Simmons]. I don't realize that they're putting on an act for some reason that has to do with this story, but I get very upset about the way he's talking to her -- and I'm sitting with a couple of young ladies. I don't know who they are or why I'm sitting with them, but they were attractive, so I was very happy to do it. So I get up, and I bring the two young ladies with me, and I walk over, and I give Agent Coulson a little tongue-lashing for the way he's been talking to her -- and that's my role! I can't wait to see it when it comes out.

IGN: This is not the only time one of your cameos has included you with some lovely ladies.

Lee: Well, I don't ask for it, but I certainly appreciate it! I mean, it's more fun to be with a lovely lady than a funny-looking man, that's for sure -- or even a good-looking man!

IGN: The show and the films have Coulson as a big player in S.H.I.E.L.D., though he’s not from the comic books. Is it interesting for you to see it branch out like that?

Lee: Well, I guess they felt they had to have some normal people — or seemingly normal people — and certainly Clark is doing a very good job playing the role. I just feel that we also need more colorful characters to be popping up all the time. I don't mean that Clark isn't colorful as an actor, but what I mean is characters who as comic book characters are more colorful.

IGN: They have announced now that Deathlok and Lady Sif will appear, among others from the comics. Are you excited to see some of those characters interact with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Lee: Yeah, that will be great. I think that's what the show needs. I think people will tune in to see those characters and will enjoy seeing them in the context of being with normal people on a normal mission.

Yes, we need to update this video...

IGN: Once you did your first Marvel cameo, did it just become a natural thing that they kept asking you to do these appearances?

Lee: I guess so. I guess I was so magnificent as a cameo actor that the word got around quickly. Actually, the first one I remember -- your memory is probably better than mine -- but I it was the X-Men movie where some guy was coming out of the ocean, and I was standing on the beach selling hot dogs. He passed by, and I looked surprised to see he was a super-type of character. Do you remember that one?

IGN: Oh yeah!

Lee: I think that was the first of the cameos, and that surprised me. Bryan Singer, the director, just called and said, "Hey, I'd like you to be in a scene here." So I stood there, and I tried to be the best hot dog vendor I could ever be. The scene only lasted a couple of seconds, but it must have given some other people ideas, because after that a lot of people started calling and asking me to do cameos. Even though I'm very shy in retiring, I did get myself to do it.

IGN: They've announced several more Marvel TV series coming up on Netflix -- Daredevil, Luke Cage, among them -- are you excited both to see more of these TV shows and also by all the cameo possibilities?

Lee: Oh, absolutely! Even if I don't get cameos in 'em -- which of course would be a great mistake on Marvel's part -- but I am very excited to see them. The more of our characters we can get on television, the better. They're doing great in the movies, and they should do just as well on TV.

Stan Lee will make his cameo on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Tuesday, February 4th.

Liam Neeson Joins Martin Scorsese's Silence

Actor Liam Neeson takes a break from action to spread the Good News.

According to Deadline, the Taken star has boarded director Martin Scorsese's 2015 project, Silence. The new movie, which also stars Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), is an adaptation of Shusaku Endo's novel about two Jesuit priests attempting to spread Christianity in Japan during the country's Sakoku Edict, which sought to drive out foreign influence by effectively closing off the country.

Silence won't be Neeson's first missionary role, if that is indeed the role he is set for. He also starred in The Mission, a 1986 film about Jesuit priests in South America forced to protect the natives from fellow colonists. He also previously worked with Scorsese on Gangs of New York.

Liam Neeson as Father Fielding in The Mission.

Star Trek Online Celebrates 4th Anniversary

In commemoration of Star Trek Online's fourth anniversary, Perfect World has launched the mid-season update, Season 8.5, which was announced earlier this month.

From today until February 27, Captains  will be able to play a new 'Featured Episode' titled "A Step Between Stars," with Star Trek: Voyager actor Tim Russ reprising his role as Admiral Tuvok.

After each playthrough of the event, Captains will be able to choose between one of three pieces of unique ship equipment. They'll also be rewarded with 400 'Qmendations' on completion of their first playthrough. 'Qmendations' are used to unlock one of the newly added Dyson Science Destroyers.

Other events featured in the anniversary festivities include 'Q's Party Patrol' missions in which the player can earn 40 Qmendations each day, along with other cosmetic items.

IGN gave Star Trek Online a 6.8 when it was released in 2010. We really enjoyed its beautiful graphics, but we weren't so enamored by its repetitive gameplay.

Nintendo to Consider Mergers and Acquisitions, Iwata Says

After dramatically cutting fiscal year sales forecasts, president Satoru Iwata said Nintendo is looking to new areas for sales, marketing and customers.

"We should abandon old assumptions about our businesses," Iwata told The Nikkei. "We are considering [mergers and acquisitions] as an option. For this reason, we'll step up share buybacks."

Two weeks ago, the company cut the Wii U sales forecast from 9 to 2.8 million units, for the fiscal year ending March 31. Nintendo also cut the projection for 3DS sales, its perennial life boat, from 18 to 13.5 million; both of these revisions change Nintendo's net income projection from a profit to loss.

"We'll change the way we sell products, by managing customer information via the Internet," Iwata told The Nikkei. "We'll offer discounts to steady, regular customers. We'll cultivate emerging markets and launch new businesses in health and other areas. In an emerging country, you can expand the user base only after you offer a product line different from advanced economies in pricing."

Iwata also said that quarterly earnings reports aren't suitable for Nintendo, as it never knows whether a product will be a hit until it releases. Despite the current climate, Iwata remains optimistic, saying Nintendo doesn't want to turn to a management buyout just because it is inconvenienced now.

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto Joins Hitman Reboot

It was announced earlier this month that Homeland's Rupert Friend would replace the late Paul Walker in the title role of Agent 47 in Fox's Hitman reboot.

Today, Deadline reports that Zachary Quinto, Spock in the new Star Trek films, will join the film in an unspecified role.

Strangling people with piano wire is... illogical.

Strangling people with piano wire is... illogical.

Deadline also refers to the movie as Agent 47 and calls it a "sequel" rather than a "reboot." The site points out that the 2007 Hitman film, starring Timothy Olyphant (Justified), actually did pretty well overseas, earning $60.2 million of its final $99.96 million gross outside of America.

Considering that FOX International is handling this project, it makes sense that they might not feel the need to label it a "reboot."

Agent 47 begins shooting this March.

Michael Pitt Cast as Mason Verger for Hannibal: Season 2

Some Hannibal spoilers may follow…

Boardwalk Empire star Michael Pitt will join the cast of Hannibal beginning in Season 2 in a recurring role that will be well known to fans of the film series and Thomas Harris Hannibal Lecter books: Mason Verger. That name not ringing any bells? Well, how about a picture:

Hope you're not eating. Ever again.

Hope you're not eating. Ever again.

Remember now? Yick. Verger was the mutilated rich guy played by Gary Oldman in the 2001 film Hannibal. In the film and the novel it was based on, Verger tells Clarice Starling that in his youth he was an infatuated patient of Dr. Lecter’s. One night the unhinged little brat invited the good doctor over for dinner. As is all too often the case, one thing led to another and, before he knew it, a harmless evening of Quaaludes and pirate shirts turned without warning into someone getting his face chewed off.

Pitt’s Verger will be the younger, presumably facially intact version, which means at some point we may be in for a pretty gruesome date scene. Katharine Isabelle, who was terrific as Mary Mason in 2012’s American Mary, was recently cast as Verger’s tormented sister -- and, in the book, eventual bodyguard -- Margo.

Hannibal season two kicks off February 28th.

7 Ways Flappy Bird is Like Dark Souls

Don’t be fooled by Flappy Bird’s colorful, Mario-inspired graphics. The game is a brutal, unforgiving, neverending gauntlet of pain and death. And once you start playing it you might never stop.

Flappy Bird is the Dark Souls of casual mobile games. Allow me to explain why:

1) It punishes you for the smallest mistakes.

Flappy Bird is a simple take on a well-worn gameplay idea: your little bird is always moving forward. Flying through gaps keeps him alive. Hit a wall, and it’s game over. We’ve all played games like this before. But not quite like this.

To call Flappy Bird “unforgiving” is an understatement. Success requires near-perfection. There are no compromises and no second chances. Get it right, and your run continues. Make a mistake, and your run ends. It’s as simple as that.

flappy_bird-676x450

2) It may be brutally hard, but it is never unfair.

Every game-ending pipe collision is pixel-perfect. Some climbs or dives might be hard to make, but none are impossible. Every single death in Flappy Bird is always your fault, never the game. You either jumped too early, or too late - that’s all there is to it.

The game doesn’t even escalate in difficulty over time until you get yourself into an unfair or impossible situation, either. It doesn’t need to. The amount of focus and precision required guarantees that every run will end. Likely sooner rather than later.

3) You can feel yourself getting better…

At first Flappy Bird’s gaps seem impossibly small. For 10 runs (or more) your high score will probably be… 1. Maybe as high as 3 or 4, if you’re a natural. You’ll crash into the tops of pipes, or not jump in time. Over and over again.

But then something interesting happens.

The gaps that used to seem so miniscule genuinely start to look bigger. The game starts to feel easier. It doesn’t happen right away, but it does happen. Once you truly understand Flappy Bird’s momentum, you’ll fly through 10 gaps. Then 20. Then 30. You’ll think back to when you couldn’t get a score higher than 1 and laugh.

download

4) ...But you never truly feel safe

Even with a 50+ high score and most runs climbing well into the double digits, you’ll still die on the first or second gap. A lot. You never feel safe or comfortable in Flappy Bird’s gauntlet. The game is still out to kill you. And it will.

5) Nothing is explained to you. You learn by dying.

Flappy Bird’s confidence and purity is such that nothing needs to be explained to you. You’re just shown a picture of a bird and a single command: “Tap!” - nothing more is needed. Through just a few moments of trial-and-error you’ve learned everything you need to know.

flappy-bird

6) You play best when you concentrate and focus intently.

Flappy Bird is a game that demands your full attention.

Even though the entire game is just one-fingered tapping, this is not a game you can win on the bus, or absent-mindedly in line. You need to lose yourself in it. You can’t allow it to put you on-tilt when a small error messes up a great run. You have to become the Flappy Bird zen master, shutting out the outside world and your own inner monologue. Only then can true Platinum Medal success come.

7) Success feels so, so good.

Every run in Flappy Bird ends in abrupt disappointment. But putting together a perfect run and setting a new high score feels so good that you can’t ever stay mad. Whenever you set a new high score you’re compelled to snap a screenshot and share your success with all your Flappy Bird-playing friends.

Not unlike finally making it past a brutal Dark Souls boss.

What Do You Think of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor?

This morning it was announced that Jesse Eisenberg will portray Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred Pennyworth in the Man of Steel sequel. While the casting choice of Jeremy made sense to most, there were mixed reactions about Jesse Eisenberg.

We asked IGN readers their thoughts on this interesting piece of casting news.

Don't Forget He's Already Played a Villain

Some would say Jesse Eisenberg has already played an evil villain when he portrayed Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.

@IGN Call me crazy, but I can see it. I'm on board.

— Jose Rodriguez (@ThatComicNerd14) January 31, 2014

@IGN After remembering the Social Network, I'm beginning to like the idea. Could maybe look a little young, but the film's 2 1/2 years away.

— Chris Boulton (@ChrisBoulton666) January 31, 2014

@IGN love the casting. Think an evil Mark Zuck from the Social Network. Love it.

— Tim Shelton (@TimShelton) January 31, 2014

@IGN Cant wait, he did play the asshole role pretty well in The Social Network, im sure he can do a great Luthor

— mtirado46 (@mtirado46) January 31, 2014

It's About His Brain

Lex Luthor is an arrogant genius. He plays mind games with Superman and can stand toe to toe with him because of his brain. Going back to The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg has showed he can be an arrogant genius while captivating audiences.

@IGN I like what they're doing. Lex Luthor doesn't need to be buff and intimidating. It's his brain that fights Superman, not his fists.

— Will. (@RealWallWilsh) January 31, 2014

@IGN Jesse Eisenberg an amazing actor, he often seems calm & cool headed. His acting style could be used to add more maniac sentiment to Lex

— Joel Reimer (@Joelcool7) January 31, 2014

Mind games galore! Im for it! RT @IGN So... Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Thoughts?

— IИ4ΛMI$ (@InfamisME) January 31, 2014

NOOOOOOO

Just like when it was announced Ben Affleck would play Batman, some people felt the production team behind the film are "losing their mind."

@IGN It's really not what I imagined at all. I'm kind of not looking forward to this anymore.

— You Know Whatever (@derickisawesome) January 31, 2014

@IGN sucks ass, i give up on this movie.

— RAV (@xcatrachox) January 31, 2014

@ign Sounds like there's a terrible casting director for this movie

— Isaac Tracz (@IsaacTracz) January 31, 2014

@IGN I don't see him as Lex, and I respect Jesse as an actor.

— Crooker DeWitt (@Rene_Maya) January 31, 2014

How Old Is He?

Some feel Jesse isn't old enough to play a powerful business man like Lex Luthor.

@IGN What the hell. He's so young though, especially when compared to Superman and Batman. I was expecting an older, tougher-looking Lex.

— DΞM0N FRΞΞZΞ (@demonfreeze) January 31, 2014

@IGN love Jesse. Great actor. But isn't he a little young to fill those boots?

— Aaron Travis Peters (@AaronAaronson) January 31, 2014

Well... We Know One Company Approves

@IGN Well we're on board with it.

— DC Comics (@DCComics) January 31, 2014

What do you guys think? Will Jesse Eisenberg knock it out of the park or does this give you reason to hop off of the hype train? Let us know in the comments below!

DICE Details Next Battlefield 4 Tweaks

Balancing requests are among the most frequent DICE receives from Battlefield 4 players, and the developers have already tweaked a number of weapons and vehicles in response. Today on the Battlefield Blog, though, the devs are highlighting the items they believe are "working as designed."

For now, at least. DICE says it welcomes further "suggestions and comments," but doesn't believe some hot-button items currently need balancing.

Most notably among the balancing items DICE is monitoring:

  • TV Missiles - Players have requested they become a one-hit kill on enemy aircraft. DICE disagrees.
  • Sniper Rifles - Players have requested these be upgraded to penetrate body armor at close range. DICE says body armor is designed to specifically counter those threats.
  • Long-range Scopes for DMRs - Players want them, but DICE says they would have a negative impact on gameplay.
  • Aircraft Counter Measures - Players have asked the reload for counter measures to be increased. DICE says it's a "tricky balance," but it likes the current reload times.
  • Attack Helicopter Maneuverability - Players would like increased maneuverability, but DICE says it recently tweaked attack copter weapons, and it wants to see if that solves the complaints first.

As to the items that are being balanced, pistols and grenades are getting a number of tweaks that players should see in-game "soon."

Personally, I'm happy we can start focusing on balancing Battlefield 4 instead of worrying about its bugs and stability issues.

New 16GB Ouya Announced for $129.99

Just under a year since the launch model first started shipping to Kickstarter backers, Ouya is introducing a new 16GB version of the Android-based games console. Preserving the same design and core features of the original, the new high-capacity variant doubles the storage from 8GB, affording more space for games, apps, and media. The company had previously offered a 16GB version of the system as part of a limited edition white variant for the holidays.

However, prospective owners will have to pay for the privilege, with the 16GB model priced at $129.99 — $30 more than the base model. While the expanded internal memory is certainly convenient, the system's existing USB storage port already provides extensive upgradability.

The 16GB Ouya is on sale at the company's official website, Amazon, and more.

Dead Island will be the first of the two released for free. Beginning tomorrow, February 1, the open-world zombie game will drop from its usual price of $19.99 for two weeks. While it had technical issues, it was well received upon its release in 2011, earning an 8.0 in IGN's review. The game went on to be a major success, having sold 5 million copies as of early last year. Those strong sales led to a sequel, Dead Island: Riptide, being released last April.

On February 16, Dead Island will revert to its normal price and Toy Soldiers: Cold War, usually priced at $14.99, will be made free for the remainder of the month. The XBLA game is the 2011 sequel to the original Toy Soldiers and, like Dead Island, it too was received positively, earning an 8.5 in our review.

As always with the Games With Gold promotion, these games are available only to Xbox Live Gold members. They are free to keep and re-download the games forever -- even if their subscription lapses -- but a download of them must be initiated during the two-week span that they are free.

Both of these games, as with all of the games since the promotion started, are for Xbox 360, but we know there are plans to begin including Xbox One games sometime this year.

Widening The Niche: The PlayStation Vita in 2014

Yesterday the PlayStation Vita – Sony’s more-than-capable handheld device – was once again pushed to the forefront. The slimmer, thinner, redesigned Vita is heading to the UK market.

Take a look at the box. It’s a signal of intent. Proudly on the front there’s a logo that boasts integration with the PlayStation 4. Turn it around, and the first image that catches your eye on the back, is a picture of Sony’s latest console – the most successful of the ‘next-gen’ platforms. It’s outstripping its direct competitor, Xbox One, by 50% in the UK.

Sales of the Vita, however, were not spectacular upon its release. Sony acknowledges this, even admitting the hardware was really conceived before smart phones and tablets reshaped the gaming landscape. But there’s reason to be moderately hopeful. Vita experienced an uplift in sales in the run up to Christmas – and though the festive period will have played a role, it's an effect that Sony's attributing to the release of the PlayStation 4.

There was a 163% uplift in PS Vita sales post PS4 launch."

So where does Vita stand in the UK? Yesterday I spoke with Fergal Gara, the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, at the announcement of the refreshed hardware coming to the UK, and the strategy he outlined was confident but more importantly self-aware.

“Does it have huge mass-market potential? Probably not. But it does have a place,” Gara tells me.

A part of Sony’s strategy when it comes to PS Vita is being open and upfront about the platform, who it naturally appeals to, its strengths, limitations and potential reach.

Crucially, Sony isn’t trying to make the device into something it’s not; it’s not trying to take on iOS devices, head-to-head. It wouldn’t win. Its natural place is with a more traditional type of player, the individual who will make room in their bags for a dedicated device.

That’s an aspect of Vita that has only benefitted from the successful launch of PlayStation 4, a console that, from its very first announcement, has actively courted those who were eager for a device devoted primarily to games. According to Gara, the Vita has directly benefitted from the launch Sony’s new console.

Does it have huge mass-market potential? Probably not. But it does have a place."

“There was a 163% uplift in PS Vita sales post PS4 launch,” he says. “A significant number of PS Vita purchasers in the UK indicated that Remote Play was their reason for purchase, and we are subsequently seeing lots of these new PS Vita users connecting to PS4 with this feature.”

Naturally, Gara is keen to underline the handheld’s kinship with the new console. “There’s a lot of commonality with the PlayStation 4 in that we launched it as a gamer’s device, because first and foremost it is a gamer’s device: you’ve got full controls, you’ve got high-quality visuals.”

Given the recent boost experienced by the Vita, I was interested to know if Sony would capitalise upon the relationship with PS4. Would it extend beyond Remote Play and Cross Buy?

For the time being, Gara is more focussed on strengthening the Vita’s existing compatibility with the PS4, which was purposely underplayed during the recent launch. “What we can do is draw out the message a bit more strongly in our marketing,” he says.

“At this moment in time, that feels worth doing. We can see it in the usage patterns. We can see it – it’s not just us saying there’s a feature there. It’s people using the feature. So that there is something to talk about a little more loudly.

“When you’ve got a huge launch to execute, and you start talking about everything on your list, your feature list, you just bamboozle people. It was there as a message, but it certainly wasn’t a big loud message.”

A significant number of PS Vita purchasers in the UK indicated that Remote Play was their reason for purchase."

What about a bundle? It’s something that’s been rumoured ever since the console was released, with some retailers even creating bespoke packages. Gara agrees it’s natural pairing, but it’s not really the most important thing.

“We’ll think about that. For me, that’s not the most important thing – that just affects the cardboard you chuck in a bag on the way home. It’s what you do and what you understand it’s going to do, and what you buy into from the PlayStation ecosystem point of view.”

But for PS Vita to really thrive, Gara acknowledges the need for it to connect with a wider audience. “It’s got a niche in the market. But it could have a bigger niche in that market. So we’ve taken it younger and cheaper and broader in terms of content over the last year or so.

“Where we see it now – and it’s going to sound a little bit schizophrenic – but it has a role for each. For the hardcore gamer, there are still high-quality games as standalone games, but there’s also the relationship with the PlayStation 4. So I think that, in very quick summary, might be what PS Vita might mean to a core gamer.

“But for a younger gamer or a more casual gamer, you saw the mega packs – the Disney pack, the first Mega Pack – it had much more of a broader range of titles. Lots more casual, easy-access games.

“So I think there’s something for – I won’t go far as to say everyone – but there’s a broad spectrum of gamers there with Vita.”

With sales of the Vita up following the launch of the PS4, what would be considered a success for the handheld in 2014? As before, there was a modest optimism to Gara’s outlook.

“From a sales point of view it should at least easily be able to maintain sales. It’s premature to say by how much it can grow, but that’s not out of the question.

“But I want it to maintain a strong kind of ‘side-gig’ within our portfolio. I think it enhances our ecosystem. It’s a PlayStation point of difference.

“We’ve done our best to improve the price, the content. To evolve it into an easier to use but also more digital device with more interesting digital content, and now a great role with PS4. So it has a place, therefore we should support that and we will continue to support that.”

I want it to maintain a strong kind of ‘side-gig’ within our portfolio. I think it enhances our ecosystem."

The idea of a device which has the sole purpose of playing games is certainly one that resonates with me. Games are big enough that they don’t have to be regarded as a secondary feature, a cool centre point. They are important enough to take centre-stage.

I’d like to think that dedicated devices very much still have a place. The Vita, with its unique array of inputs and sensors, is a piece of technology that embraces that notion, but for many it might seem too specialised. More software in the vein of Tearaway – an experience that really showcases the unique power of the platform – would undoubtedly make the case for Vita much harder to ignore, and a price cut certainly wouldn’t hurt.

That might lie ahead, but for the time being, appealing to a younger demographic while also increasing its ties with bonds the PS4, all framed by a more tempered definition of success, is probably the best way for Sony to plot the future of the Vita.

Remember Me Developer Allegedly Files For Bankruptcy

Remember Me developer Dontnod Entertainment has filed for the French equivalent of bankruptcy, according to a number of international publications.

French outlets Societe and Factor News both report that the studio has sought "redressement judiciaire", which is for all intents and purposes bankruptcy in France.

Remember Me released last year to mediocre reviews. Though it crafted a beautiful and intriguing world, the gameplay was unbalanced and, ultimately, meant the title failed to find an audience.

It was announced earlier this week that Remember Me will be available on PS3 to North American PS Plus subscribers next month. It was available for European subscribers last November.

PS Plus Subscriptions Triple Following PS4 Launch

The launch of the PS4 caused the number of PlayStation Plus subscriptions to triple, Sony has announced.

The news came courtesy of Sony UK boss Fergal Gara, who made the revelation at the PS Vita Slim event IGN attended yesterday.

While Gara highlighted that needing PS Plus in order to play PS4 games online undoubtedly played a part in the spike, he also expressed his confidence that the value offered by the service was a driving force behind the increased uptake.

Elsewhere in the briefing, Gara revealed that there is now 1.5 PS4 consoles in the UK for every Xbox One.

We'll have a full interview with Gara up on IGN soon. In the meantime, check out what PS Plus subscribers in Europe and North America will be getting in February.

More Xbox One Rumours as Microsoft Tries to Track Leaker

A fresh Xbox One rumour suggests Microsoft is planning to release a cheaper model of the console later this year.

An anonymous source claimed to VG247 that Microsoft has already briefed its publishing partners about the claim.

It's not immediately clear what model is being discussed, as the source can't confirm whether it's the disc-less model with a bluetooth adapter that was mentioned by another leaker yesterday. Supposedly, once the new model is out Microsoft would drop the price of the current Xbox One model to bring it in line with the PS4.

We've reached out to Microsoft to try and substantiate the rumours, along with the ones yesterday about the white and Titanfall models coming to retail, though it seems unlikely the company is going to comment.

What's interesting about yesterday's claims, especially the ones about the Xbox One game release dates including Halo 5 and Crackdown 3, is that Kotaku claims to have word from a Microsoft contact that company execs are trying to track down whoever leaked the details and take legal action against them. While this doesn't mean everything or even anything he said was true, it's clear that Microsoft isn't ready to talk about all its future plans.

We're working to verify all of this with Microsoft as fast as we can and will update the story as soon as we know more. The likelihood is we'll be told the company doesn't comment on rumour and speculation though, so we may just have to wait and see.

So have a listen, or a watch if that's more your thing, as we ramble our way along and as usual narrowly avoid ballsing it all up. On the plus side, no one nearly sh**s themselves this week. Which is always a plus.

Batman: Arkham Origins DLC Cancelled For Wii U

Batman: Arkham Origins will no longer be getting story DLC on Wii U, Warner Bros. has confirmed.

The publisher explained in a statement to IGN that the decision was made as demand for DLC on the console apparently isn't strong enough.

"Based on demand for DLC content on the system, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has made the decision to remove its offering of the upcoming all-new story campaign for Wii U," it reads.

Anyone who has a Season Pass for content on the console will apparently be given a refund. A tease posted on Facebook at the start of the year suggests the story DLC will focus on Mr. Freeze.

Back to the Future Becoming West End Musical

Back to the Future is set to hit the West End stage, when a musical adaptation of the 1980s classic debuts in London next year.

Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote and directed the 1985 film starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, will again team up with co-writer Bob Gale to write the book for the stage version. Jamie Lloyd, who directed James McAvoy last year in a very successful production of Macbeth, will also help write the script and take on directing duties.

Composing will be handled by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard. Silvestri worked with Zemeckis on a number of other films including Romancing the Stone, Forrest Gump and Cast Away, while Ballard is a six-time Grammy winner whose previous theatre credits include Ghost: The Musical and who also co-wrote and produced Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill.

Back to the Future was released in 1985, and follows Marty Mcfly (Fox) as he travels back to his home town in 1955, and has to watch his parents' relationship unfold before him. The musical will be released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film, and a Broadway transfer is possible if the British version does well.

Brian Singer and Simon Kinberg Discuss Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse

You’ve seen all 25 magazine cover character reveals, and you’ve seen the latest official screenshots. Now you can hear about X-Men: Days of Future Past straight from the mouths of director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg. The two also opened up about their next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, which is based on the Age of Apocalypse storyline from the comics.

The interview appears in the new issue of Empire, but Coming Soon has posted some of the Q&A. A few questions kind of answer themselves. (Was anyone really confused about future Wolverine having metal claws? Like there isn’t a main character who possesses atomic-level control of all metal?) Then there are questions about the future of the franchise, including the introduction of the ancient mutant known as Apocalypse, who will be the main villain in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Said Singer, “What would people thousands of years ago, without the benefit of science, think mutants were? And more importantly, what would mutants thousands of years ago think they were? Gods? Titans? Angels? Demons? And if such mutants did exist thousands of years ago, what became of them? Did one survive?"

Singer notes that X-Men: Apocalypse will be more of a sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class, though the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which opens on May 23, lead into Apocalypse.  Though it’s impossible to be sure, it sounds like the old guard cast -- Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry and company -- are out of the picture for good.

In the interview Singer takes time to quash a rumor (again) that is so insane I can’t believe it's still kicking around. In case you were worried, rest easy: Magneto will NOT be taken over by an alien intelligence and somehow become Apocalypse. Crisis averted!

Empire’s print edition also contains some new screenshots from DoFP. One of those images merits special attention. It features Evan Peters’ Quicksilver on the left looking a little nonplussed. But who in the name of Stan Lee is that little kid sitting on his lap? Is it possible, however unlikely, that we’re looking at Scarlet Witch, a/k/a Wanda Maximoff?

Evan Peters as Quicksilver and...?

As we know from the comics, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are brother and sister, which certainly fits with the image above. The only flaw in that theory would be their age; in the comics the two are twins, fathered by none other than Magneto. If Scarlet Witch is indeed depicted as a child in the Fox-backed DoFP, it would be a huge departure from the Elizabeth Olsen version of the character that will appear in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.

What do you think? Is that pink princess costume looking a little scarlet, or is it just witch-ful thinking?

(Oh, come on. Witch-ful thinking was hilarious. You loved it.)
