This Week on the Wii U and 3DS eShop (Jan. 30, 2014)

Our long national nightmare is over. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is on the Wii U Virtual Console finally. Alongside Link to the Past this week is Mario Bros. on Virtual Console, a few 3DS eShop games, and a couple of rad deals on indie games on Wii U and 3DS. It might not be a plentiful new release week, but if you missed out on Runner2, Toki Tori 2+, or Spin the Bottle, the Super Indie Connection Sale is worth checking out. Now if only Super Mario Bros. 3 could come out in North America...

Wii U Virtual Console

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past ($7.99)

Every other region has it already, but finally, the SNES classic can be played on the Wii U Virtual Console. Originally released in 1991, Link to the Past is heralded as one of the greatest games in the Zelda and in some circles, as one of the greatest games ever. Take good ol’ pink-haired Link (or whatever you name him) and save Zelda from Agahnim and that not-so-secret villain behind his power. Whether you experienced this version of Hyrule for the first time in Link Between Worlds or when you were 8 years old on the SNES, Link to the Past is almost always worth replaying. Remember, if you got it on Wii Virtual Console (or got the recent Club Nintendo reward), you can upgrade it to Wii U for $1.50.

3DS Virtual Console

Mario Bros. ($4.99)

Did you play NES Remix? If you did, remember the Mario Bros. levels? Did you enjoy them? Then maybe you should get this game since it where those levels came from. Coincidentally, it’s also where Luigi came from, and a lot of the enemies and mechanics used in Super Mario Bros. So, if you want to check out Mario Bros. for historical context, go for it. I don’t recommend it too much, though.

3DS Original Download Games

Castle Clout 3D ($4.99)

Fire up your trebuchet and crash some darn castles in Castle Clout 3D. After numerous versions on mobile platforms, the series heads to 3DS where you can control the action on the touch screen with the benefit of stereoscopic 3D. You can also create custom levels and play some local hot seat multiplayer.

Arc Style: Solitaire ($2.99)

This 3DS version of Solitaire features two styles of the card game type: Klondike and Monte Carlo. You can play on the top or the bottom screen as well as tweak the difficulty of both games. You can undo moves, save your game, and track high scores. Keep on playing and you’ll get a variety of different decks to choose from.

Touch Battle 3D Tank 2 ($4.99)

The sequel to a 2012 eShop game, Touch Battle 3D Tank 2 once again has you jumping in a tank fighting other tanks and enemies in a top-down view while using the touch screen to aim. It features more content than the first game, with a second tank and 20 more stages among other things.
