Some Hannibal spoilers may follow…
Boardwalk Empire star Michael Pitt will join the cast of Hannibal beginning in Season 2 in a recurring role that will be well known to fans of the film series and Thomas Harris Hannibal Lecter books: Mason Verger. That name not ringing any bells? Well, how about a picture:
Remember now? Yick. Verger was the mutilated rich guy played by Gary Oldman in the 2001 film Hannibal. In the film and the novel it was based on, Verger tells Clarice Starling that in his youth he was an infatuated patient of Dr. Lecter’s. One night the unhinged little brat invited the good doctor over for dinner. As is all too often the case, one thing led to another and, before he knew it, a harmless evening of Quaaludes and pirate shirts turned without warning into someone getting his face chewed off.
Pitt’s Verger will be the younger, presumably facially intact version, which means at some point we may be in for a pretty gruesome date scene. Katharine Isabelle, who was terrific as Mary Mason in 2012’s American Mary, was recently cast as Verger’s tormented sister -- and, in the book, eventual bodyguard -- Margo.
Hannibal season two kicks off February 28th.
