All-Star Western #28 Review

Jonah Hex has been living it up in the present day DCU for the last few issues. Writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti have been putting Hex through a lot lately, but the last issue found him facing what was too much to bear. All-Star Western #28 shows us Hex’s recovery process while concluding this arc along the way. The result is a fun story that features an abrupt and somewhat clunky ending.

Palmiotti and Gray have taken Hex on many adventures throughout their tenure. This particular adventure has placed Hex the furthest away from his comfort zone, and it has allowed the creative team to explore him in a fun way that also references the time traveling history of the character. While this issue manages to get things back on track for our main character, it doesn’t really manage to say much more about him other than the fact that he wants to go home again. In fact, most of the character development in this issue comes from Gina, which isn’t a bad thing. The end of this issue features the return of a familiar character, but this time around he is disappointingly used as a mere plot device, and is gone again all too quickly.

Staz Johnson and Fabrizio Fiorentino share art duties. Both artists have unique styles that, on their own, are fine interpretations of the characters featured here. Unfortunately, the shift from one artist to another is anything other than smooth. It will definitely take you out of the otherwise enjoyable story, even if only for a moment.
