The Top 5 Portlandia Sketches

Ahhh, Portland. Home of eco-friendly, locally grown, veggie-fed, GMO-free hilarity.

It's also the place stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein call home on the sketch series Portlandia - which returns to IFC for its fourth season this Thursday, February 27th at 10/9c. And with special guests like Olivia Wilde, Kirsten Dunst, Maya Rudolph, Jello Biafra, and Paul Allen (joining the recurring Kyle MacLachlan, Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley Jr., and Steve Buscemi), Season 4 is sure to hit us with more laughs from the frilliest and fringe-iest edges of liberal sensitivity and smug alterno-rebeliousness.

Portlandia-608x333

To celebrate the return of this Peabody Award-winning series, we here at IGN have plucked out the five best sketches from the first three seasons. Let's get to it...

5

Spoiler Alert

I think it's a safe assumption that IGN readers hold their entertainment near and dear to their hearts. And are some of the biggest (and brightest) spoiler-phobes around. Well, Portlandia is right there with you. Nevertheless, this sketch (which comes with a warning at the beginning) contains A TON OF BIG SPOILERS. For TV shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Boy Meets World...you name it! So tread lightly.

4

Unconventional Art

There are a ton of sketches on Portlandia revolving around the peculiarities and eccentricities of the city's residents, but nothing that nothing quite captures the insane desire to turn everything into a non-coformist art project like this one - in which Fred and Carrie find themselves being assailed, both mentally and physically, by a town full of wanna-be visionaries

3

Put a Bird On It

PUT. A. BIRD. ON. IT.

It's so simple. Need to spruce up a drab piece of clothing or a plain-looking purse? Just let Bryce and Lisa draw the silhouette of a bird on the damn thing. Voilà! Instant interesting-ness!

All in all, a very funny jab at simple-minded crafts motivated by empty artistry. Though I definitely have seen some birds that need a bird. *sigh* If only I could put a bird on my life.

2

Battlestar Galactica

Once again, Portlandia's love (and obsession) with quality TV shines through as Fred and Carrie's life quickly crumbles around them as they fall down the uber-relatable binge-watch rabbit hole that was Syfy's Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica reboot. And I love how, in a town seemingly filled with lofty literary, cuisinal, and cultural pretensions, TV manages to eke through as everyone's core weakness. Plus, in today's era of Netflix (especially their new original programming) binge-viewing is more relevant than ever. And plenty of jokes about people "calling in 'House of Cards' to work" have already been made.

1

Dream of the 90s

"Portland is a city where young people go to retire."

Sure, "Dream of the 90s" is an easy go-to for number one. But it's just got so much greatness in it. Especially for those who lived through the 90s. The very first segment of the series, this was the gateway sketch into the world of Portlandia, giving viewers a quick primer on the incredibly funny things they were about to see on the show - including putting a bird on things.

Tribal tats, flannel, piercings, lack of ambition - the 90s were a grungy good time.
