Microsoft Considers Free Windows 8.1 Bundle

Earlier this week, ZDNet reported Microsoft was experimenting with the concept of a free version of its latest operating system, Windows 8.1. Speaking with sources familiar with Microsoft's current plans, The Verge is now reporting a bundled version of the OS--called Windows 8.1 with Bing--is already in the works. Allegedly, the free bundle is being positioned as an incentive for Windows 7 users to upgrade, but this offer could extend further.

Currently, a Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 8.1 costs $120 USD. But according to these latest rumors, Windows 8.1 with Bing could be a free or low-cost alternative bundled with packaged apps. Microsoft could see the bundle as a way to both increase the number of users on Windows 8.1, and simultaneously draw attention to its other services, like the subscription-based Office 365.

Similar rumors have floated around as of late, claiming Microsoft may offer a free version of its Windows Phone OS. Of course, none of this is confirmed with Microsoft, so take all rumors like these with a dose of skepticism.
