Warner Bros. Might be Making a Minecraft Movie

It looks like a Minecraft movie might be happening after all.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the crafting game from developer Mojang, and Lego: The Movie producer Roy Lee will oversee the project through his studio Vertigo Entertainment.

Marcus Persson, better known by his programmer nom de plume Notch, has alluded to the project on his Twitter account.

"Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie," Persson Tweeted. I wanted to be the leak."

In a statement, Persson told Game Informer "I've personally mostly stayed out of it, but I do know we've been talking to WB about making a movie," adding, "negotiations have been going on for a while, but I have no idea what the status of those negotiations are, or how likely the movie is to happen."

This news comes after the recent shut-down of a fan-funded Minecraft movie on Kickstarter.

Regarding the fan-film, Notch said that Mojang won't "allow half a million Kickstarters based on our ip without any deals in place." Of course, it seems a deal is now in place.

The original Minecraft on PC just recently surpassed 100 million registered users, and versions for the Xbox 360 and PS3 enjoy enormous popularity as well.

IGN has reached out to Notch for a comment.

What do you think? Are you excited by the prospect of Minecraft on the big screen? Let us know in the comments.
