A revamped version of the classic game Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will be going online on March 8.
BBC Radio 4 Extra is overhauling the text adventure with new, HD graphics and social media integration as part of the celebration of its 30th anniversary. It'll be going live on the BBC Radio 4 Extra website, the sister network to BBC Radio 4, and players will be able to share their in-game achievements via the official Twitter feed. It will also be mobile-friendly, for gamers wanting to play while on the move.
The game's older 20th anniversary edition, launched all the way back in 2004, won a BAFTA for "Best Online Entertainment."
The BBC will also be broadcasting series one and two, "The Primary and Secondary Phase," of its Hitchhiker's Guide radio show on March 8 - the first time these programs will have been played on air in over a decade. According to the press release, some of the adventure game's puzzles will only be solvable by players with knowledge of the radio programs and general Hitchhiker's Guide backstory.
The adventure game was written in 1984 by author Douglas Adams, along with Steve Meretzky from Infocom. It was one of the best-selling games of its era. Another graphical adventure, closely based on the movie, was released in 2005 to coincide with the movie's release - we awarded it Editor's Choice in our review.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy franchise started life as a radio show in 1978, going on to spawn novels, television series, comic books, a film, and numerous fans with a strange fascination with the number 42.
