What Makes the Perfect Video Game?

Many will say that there is no such thing as a "perfect video game." While perfection may not exist in this medium, there are ways to make it that much closer.

We asked IGN readers to let us know what they believe makes the perfect video game. Although the word "perfect" is subjective, readers had some general agreements.

It's All About Story

Story. It's all about story. I can tolerate games that don't have great gameplay (see my recent top 10 games for plenty of examples), as long as the story and aesthetic reel me in. Sadly, the opposite isn't true. Obviously the perfect video game will have both, but I've always felt relatable, well-written characters can more than make up for a number of other deficits. - IGN Editor, Luke Karmali

For me, it's story telling. I think most people would argue that it's game play, but honestly, a compelling story can make you ignore some mechanical/game play related flaws (ie: "The Walking Dead"). I can easily play games like, "The Last of Us" or "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" because I am sucked into the story and I now care about not only the character I am playing as but the ones I meet. It's that sense of immersion that keeps us coming back. Graphics are just the cherry. - IGN Community Member, HiGGiE

Experience is What Makes The Perfect Game

The perfect video game is not the one that has the best story, the best graphics or the best gameplay. These are only attributes that can enhance the overall experience. That's right, the experience is what makes the perfect game. Because there are different tastes when it comes to gaming, there is no IDEAL formula to create the perfect game.

The perfect video game is not the one that has the best story, the best graphics or the best gameplay.

There are people who enjoy playing a single player great story movie like experience such as Metal Gear, The Last of Us or Mass Effect while there are other who prefer competitive multiplier such as Dota 2, Battlefield or Star Craft. Which ever the case may be, if the game manages to immerse you completely into its atmosphere making you forget about your real life problems for a while I would say it accomplished it's job. Even more so, if the game gets the player's attention enough to search more about it online and talk about it in heated arguments with friends it really means that the EXPERIENCE was incredible and without a doubt the game comes close to perfection. - IGN Community Member, jmojoker

Cohesion

I think it's a mixture of great gameplay combined with an outstanding story, has to have the visuals/graphics to bring it all together. Replay value is also a factor, has to have some reason to keep me wanting to come back, either by having great multiplayer player or some type of leveling system in single player and or alternate endings. Put all that together and you got yourself the perfect video game. Closest game that had most of that from last gen, I believe was The Last Of Us. - IGN Community Member, K.Lowdogg

Games That Aren't Scared to Try Something Different

It's hard to say what makes a perfect game because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, the perfect video game is one that makes me think about the medium in new ways. There have only been a few I've played that have done this, but the best examples I can think of are Shadow of the Colossus and Journey. They were simple yet elegant and masterful in the way they told their stories. Sure features like progression, customization, and an engaging story are incredibly appealing to me, but these features are common and expected in most games nowadays. The games that I think are perfect weren't scared to try something different and even though their ideas were outside of the box, they were executed beautifully. - IGN Editor, Leah Jackson

Memorable Universes

The best video games are the ones that can create a memorable universe with fun gameplay. People remember the great video game universes' because they left such a lasting impression. Those games are the ones that draw you in and leave you begging for more. - IGN Community Member, sambow135

Immersion

Immersion, hands down.

For me, all the elements of a video game (gameplay, audio visual arts, story telling) should come together to create something greater than any one of those single elements. For the perfect game, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; and I think that point is reached when total immersion is achieved. A wondrous world with attention to detail, an appropriate soundtrack (whether the sound comes from a symphony, or perhaps only your character's footsteps), engaging and creative gameplay, and a story (whether it's told in Hollywood fashion, or very subtly): these are all the pieces that will eventually lead to immersion. These are the games that make me ache with longing at best. - IGN Community Member, FrenchyV23

The Perfect Game is Defined by Your Life Circumstances

The perfect game is defined in some part by its own merits, but is just as fully defined by the circumstances of your lives when you encounter it. The perfect game may have been the console pack-in that awakened your love for the hobby of video gaming, or it could be the game you played for a hundred hours to help you get through a hard time, or it could be the game you played with your dad before he died. The perfect game is the game that speaks to us over and over, and remains relevant and precious against the test of time, and is a different game for each of us. - IGN Edtior, Jared Petty

There is no Such Thing as a Perfect Video Game

Only thing about this is that philosophically I don't believe a perfect video game (or any other form of art) exists - and that's also our stated policy in the review scale. Such a thing would have to appeal to all people everywhere, and that just isn't possible. - IGN Editor, Dan Stapelton

A actual perfect video game is impossible. The closest you are going to get is a game with consistently fun game play with a compelling story and well written characters. - IGN Community Member, DarthLotonicX

What is perfect to one person is mediocre to another. What do you think? Do you only care about a game's story? Do you just want solid gameplay? Let us know in the comments below or blog about it!
