Wii U Lifetime Sales Overtake Xbox 360 in Japan

Nintendo's Wii U has overtaken Microsoft's Xbox 360 in terms of lifetime sales in Japan.

Eurogamer reports that the Wii U has currently sold 1,643,095 units in Japan, ahead of the Xbox 360's lifetime total of 1,641,528.

The gap looks set to grow as time continues, seeing as Nintendo is managing to sell an additional eight or nine thousand Wii U consoles a week, while Microsoft languishes with sales of around 200.

Despite this, Nintendo's console is still some way behind lifetime sales in the territory of both the PS3 and PS2, which stand at 9.8 million and 2.5 million respectively.

The big Japanese sales news this week, however, was the PS4 moving over 300,000 units at launch. Add this to Sony's previously announced 5.3 million figure, and the company is already 600,000 sales ahead of its target for the end of March.

While the Xbox One is expected to arrive in Japan later this year, we're yet to discover exactly when. Nintendo, meanwhile, has recently slashed the number of Wii U and 3DS consoles it expects to sell by the end of the financial year, which has had a knock-on effect on its financial projections.

Where once it hoped to move 9 million Wii U consoles by the end of March, it's now aiming for 2.8 million.
