Black Science #4 Review

STK631769It's pretty much impossible not to get sucked into an issue of Black Science just from the opening splash page. This issue opens with a shot of German warplanes dropping bombs on their cybernetic American Indian foes. That statement alone sum sup the kooky brilliance of this series. Anything can happen as our heroes fight for survival and venture deeper into "The Onion." And so far, Remender has no trouble living up to the potential of his premise.

And there's no understating how integral penciller Matteo Scalera and colorist/painter Dean White are to the success of this book. Scalera has always been as adept as any artist at channeling Remender's weird imagination and bringing it to life with a dark, twisted edge. Meanwhile, White's colors create a perfect tone of unreality, horror, and occasionally, lush splendor. The series has already achieved a uniform but diverse visual style in its first handful of worlds, and there's plenty more dimension-hopping on the way.

Issue #4 closes out the series' first story arc. Our heroes make a last, desperate stand as they wait for the Pillar to activate. Sacrifices are made, and it's a testament to how quickly and capably Remender has fleshed out his cast that the consequences hit home. By the end of this issue, the overarching conflict of the series becomes more clear. We have our cast of heroes (and sleazeballs), we have our stakes, and the only question is just how strange and surreal the journey will become from here.
