Amazon is preparing to finally jump into the streaming TV hardware market, according to industry sources. The company is planning a launch of a set-top box that would be in direct competition with similar devices from Apple and Roku, which allow you to stream televisions and movies through apps like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go. It's unclear whether or not this may be the same Amazon-branded games console rumored last month.
According to Recode.net, the as-yet-unnamed device may roll out in March. Previous reports had pointed to a holiday 2013 release for the device but those plans had been scrapped. The device is likely to use a custom version of Google's Android operating system, similar to the software found on Amazon's Kindle Fire series. Amazon Prime members can currently stream television and exclusive shows through Amazon Instant Video on numerous devices, including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo’s current- and next-gen devices.
Last year, Amazon introduced AppStream, a cloud-based game streaming service.
