HTC is joining the wearable tech party and plans to launch a device of its own this year. Speaking with Bloomberg, HTC Chairman Cher Wang said that the company intends to release the new wearable by this year's holiday shopping season, although it is still working on refining the hardware to make sure its ready for consumers.
"Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems," Wang said. "These are customer-centric problems."
It's not entirely clear what type of device HTC is working on, whether it be a smartwatch like the Samsung Galaxy Gear, Google Glass-like glasses, or a "life tracker" like Sony's recently announced SmartBand. What we do know, at least, is that HTC has been dabbling with the concept of wearables for quite some time now.
In the interview, Wang also stated that the company will be putting more effort into marketing—something that HTC has been criticized for in recent past. "To tell the truth, we never think marketing is that important—this is really not very good," the executive said.
HTC is expected to launch the new version of its flagship smartphone in the coming months. Last year's HTC One, despite being an all-around fantastic device, underperformed in the market next to other high-end phones from Samsung and Apple.
