MoonBase Commander Gets a Digital Re-Release on Steam

More than eleven years after its initial release date, 2002 cult hit MoonBase Commander has finally landed on Steam.

The turn-based strategy is once again available to PC gamers for US$5.99 / UK£4.99, via both its Steam page and developer Rebellion's online store. It includes the single-player campaign, fully customisable maps, and a skirmish mode, as well as LAN support for multiplayer battles.

We scored MoonBase Commander highly back in our 2002 review, though significant sales reportedly didn't follow; it was a cult following that kept the IP afloat.

Rebellion rescued the rights to MoonBase Commander at auction in 2013, with Steamification being one of their highest priorities.

"We’re big fans of the game – it’s a classic example of simple, elegant design and its aged so well," says Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley. "Our main priority was getting Steam support sorted and show to a whole new generation of PC gamers.”

The resurrection might not end there, though, with Kingsley hinting at the IP's possible future foray into mobile.

"There's been a real renaissance in turn-based strategy recently, driven by the explosion in mobile gaming. It's something we can't ignore."
