Do you enjoy the intimacy of watching Veronica Mars at home with family and friends? Or does the idea of gathering with other fans to watch the teen sleuth's return on the big screen excite you? Either way, it looks like you'll be a happy customer.
The Wall Street Journal reports that on March 14, exactly a year after the Kickstarter campaign launched, Warner Bros. will release the Veronica Mars movie simultaneously in 270 theaters and online to rent or buy. While same-day theatrical/video on demand releases have become common practice for smaller films, Veronica Mars will mark the first time a major Hollywood studio has distributed a film in this way.
Theater chains normally rankle at the idea of violating the three month "theatrical window" between a film's big screen debut and home release for fear that the latter will steal business. Warners is countering that fear by renting out 260 AMC screens. The remaining 10 screens are privately owned.
AMC's vice president of special and alternative content explains, "On projects like this where we know we have a partner with the resources to promote the film and an easily targetable audience, we will rent theaters out." The duration of those rentals will rely on the initial success of the Veronica Mars movie.
Obviously, Warners has a lot of faith that the fans will turn up. Jeff Goldstein, the executive vice president of distribution for Warner, believes that the fan base "can make [the Veronica Mars movie] successful for us. If we extend beyond that, it'll be gravy."
So, marshmallows, will you return to Neptune by small screen or big screen?
