2K: There’s ‘No Update’ on BioShock Vita

Way back in 2011, Irrational Games Co-Founder and Creative Director Ken Levine walked on stage at Sony’s E3 press conference holding a PlayStation Vita. It was there that he announced BioShock would be coming to Sony’s handheld.

But the announcement was premature. After a long, long period of silence, Levine finally admitted that the game was never even started. And now, on the heels of the unfortunate news that Irrational Games is essentially no more, 2K games has confirmed that BioShock Vita hasn’t progressed, either.

In a conversation with CVG, a 2K Games representative told the site that it has “no update” on BioShock for Vita. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since Levine himself said that the game “is still in the hands of business people right now.”

“It’s something I’m still interested in,” he said back in 2012, “and people ask me that all the time. Right now, I’m just sort of waiting to see what the business people come up with, and that’s sort of out of my hands at this point. That’s something that I think has a lot of potential. The game idea we have has a lot of potential. It’s just a question of [if] their stars all align.”

It’s likely that BioShock Vita is nothing more than vaporware at this point, even if Levine confirmed in 2011 that it’d be an all-new game, and not a port. He also said the approach would be unique for the franchise. It’s too bad we’ll likely never see what Levine’s idea actually was.
