Four Great Indie Games From Midnight City

Indie games have a reputation for trying new things; for staying small and focused. They're able to take fresh ideas, run with them, and see them through to the end -- all while maintaining that distinct "authored" feel so often squeezed out of bigger games. The four games we previewed from Midnight City fit that description.

Blood of the Werewolf

  • Release Date: Q2 2014 | Platforms: PS3 / Xbox 360 | Developer: Scientifically Proven | Price: $10

Blood of the Werewolf released last year on Steam and now it's back for another bite on console. Once again you'll assume the role of the tragic Selena, who can change in to a ferocious werewolf when the need arises, in order to platform your way through fifteen punishing stages. The new console version is packed with everything from the original, along with an Endless Challenge Mode featuring a never-ending gauntlet of randomly-generated rooms to test your skills in. The developers have even thrown in their own excruciatingly difficult Master Challenges to test your platforming limits even further. As an extra treat, the console version also contains the new Score Rush Mode, tasking you to complete levels as fast as you can with as many kills as possible.

Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche

  • Release Date: March 2014 | Platform: PC | Developer: Beast Games | Price: $10

Don't let the bright and boisterous graphics fool you. It's up to you and your friend to work together to outrun the lava in this frantic procedurally generated arcade adventure. In the sequel to Avalanche, you'll be able to use 20 different power-ups to quickly break blocks and ascend through a seamless world. As you make your way up, there are 22 enemies and bosses to defeat, but the real challenge is climbing as high as you can go. Nothing hurts more than falling in hot, oozing lava, after all. If you feel like testing yourself against friends, their scores will pop up as you make it farther. Online leaderboards and a local score table keep things even more competitive.

Krautscape

  • Release Date: April 2014 | Platform: PC | Developer: Mario von Rickenbach, Phil McMahon & Contributors | Price: TBA

It's a bird! It's a race kart! In Krautscape, it's both! Krautscape is a unique arcade racer where the person in the lead creates the track. Speeding through power-ups will cause the track to change in perilous ways for your competitors, but if they fly off the track it's not the end of the world. In Krautscape, your kart turns in to a glider when you veer off the side of the road, allowing you to have a second chance to catch up with the guy who screwed you over. In Snake Mode, players get points for the segment of the track they build. Ping Pong Mode is a race to the finish, then to the start, and back again, with a focus on gliding your way to victory. Collector Mode tests your driving and gliding skills, challenging you to retrieve a cube off away from the track, then bringing it back to to drive your way to the finish.

Videoball

Videoball Preview
  • Release Date: Summer 2014 | Platform: TBA (We played on PC) | Developer: Action Button Entertainment | Price: TBA

Videoball is about having the best offense and the best defense. It's a game about scoring touchdowns, goals, and home runs, all in the same match. There's a ball -- sometimes there are two or three -- and the objective is to get it past the other team's goal line. You do so by charging projectiles to different intensities, aiming, and firing. Other players are doing the same, though, so sometimes it's best to focus fire on them first to stun them and open up the path to the goal. It's easy to pick up and understand, but after only a few matches you'll start to see the deeper possible strategies. In the video above, we play a few rounds with Tim Rogers, founder of Action Button Entertainment, and get destroyed by his two friends. They're very, very good at Videoball.
