Who Are The New Fantastic Four?

If the latest reports are to be believed, Fox has finally found its Fantastic Four, with Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell charged with the task of bringing the hugely popular comic book characters to life.

Evaluating The New Fantastic Four

If your first reaction to that news is ‘Miles who’ here’s some background on the soon to be awesome foursome…

Miles Teller – Reed Richards

Miles Teller has been cast as leader of the gang, Reed Richards – aka Mr. Fantastic. Teller’s first film role was in the powerful Nicole Kidman/Aaron Eckhart drama Rabbit Hole. He then went down the teen comedy route, playing Willard in the Footloose remake and wisecracking his way through both Project X and 21 and Over.

The role that really brought him attention was Daniel in The Spectacular Now, however. As the likeable but troubled youngster who embarks on a relationship with a girl outside his social circle, Teller displayed great acting chops while at the same time being charisma personified, suggesting he has the requisite skills to head up the Fantastic Four at the tender age of 27.

Teller will next be seen in the film adaptation of the hugely popular YA novel Divergent, in which he plays fan favourite Peter.

Michael B. Jordan – Johnny Storm

Michael B. Jordan was the first of the Fantastic Four characters to be cast, no doubt partly due to the fact that he worked with director Josh Trank on Chronicle. An actor with a strong background in TV, Jordan has starred in the impressive likes of The Wire, Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.

WWII flick Red Tails was his first major movie project, but at this point he’s probably best known for his work in the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station. Jordan was a revelation in the searing drama, his performance receiving rave reviews and rocketing him to the top of Hollywood casting lists.

His most recent effort has been That Awkward Moment, a romantic comedy in which Jordan played the best friend of… Miles Teller. And mercifully the two had great onscreen chemistry, which Fox is doubtless hoping they’ll carry over into The Fantastic Four. He’s also consistently funny in the film, suggesting he’s got the comic timing that playing Johnny requires.

Kate Mara – Sue Storm

If you’ve been watching the U.S. remake of House of Cards, you’ll know Kate Mara. As ambitious, manipulative, ruthless Washington reporter Zoe Barnes, she holds her own with the likes of Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, but she’ll have to show a softer side to play Sue Storm.

Like Jordan, Mara has an impressive list of TV credits, starring in 24, Nip/Tuck, Entourage and most recently American Horror Story. Film-wise she delivered a memorable turn in the little-seen Transsiberian, before popping up in the action-packed likes of Ironclad and Iron Man 2.

She'll next be seen starring opposite Johnny Depp in sci-fi flick Transendence, while after that we hopefully won’t be seeing too much of her what with Sue Storm becoming The Invisible Woman and all.

Jamie Bell – Ben Grimm

Bell hasn’t been confirmed as Ben Grimm yet, but according to today’s report, the offer is out to him. And even though he’s the youngest of the quartet, he’s got the most movie experience, having rocketed to fame as Billy Elliott at just 14.

And he’s trod an interesting path since then, combining challenging indie flicks like Filth, Dear Wendy, Hallam Foe and The Chumscrubber with the blockbuster likes of Jumper, King Kong and Flags of our Fathers.

He’s hardly the biggest bloke however, meaning that when Ben turns into The Thing the filmmakers will be heavily reliant on CGI. But Bell also has experience in the motion-capture field, having provided the voice and physical performance for the title character in Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

One of the most talented young actors working today, Bell will next be seen in TV series Turn, which tells "the untold story of America's first spy ring," while he’ll also be leaving little to the imagination in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, in which we may well see his 'thing'.

And that’s your Fantastic Four. Impressed or disappointed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and really likes the casting of Bell as Grimm. He can be found talking nonsense on both Twitter and MyIGN.
