Capcom Addresses Deep Down's Lack of Female Characters

Capcom has responded to concerns that Deep Down will not allow you to play as a female character, explaining that the original words were misinterpreted.

Producer Kazunori Sugiura explained on the game's Facebook page (via Gematsu) that while you won't be able to play as a female character, it's because the story revolves around a singular male protagonist, just like many other games.

When the news first came out, due to translation issues some were led to believe that Deep Down would offer extensive customisation options for male characters but omit the option to play as a female one for some sinister purpose. According to Sugiura, this is not the case.

"From our overseas firm, there was big misconception in an article claiming that there were 12 main characters in Deep Down, all of them male," he said. "As the person in charge on the development side, I'd like to explain the matter.

"There is one male main character in Deep Down. The story is being developed around him and his surrounding Ravens comrades. At the moment, an overseas release hasn't been decided, but I am grateful for the attention Deep Down is receiving.

"Please look out for more information in the future."

Though we're yet to receive official confirmation of a western release for Deep Down, it's likely to be some way off seeing as the Japanese release has been pushed back. That hasn't stopped Capcom releasing a number of assets for the upcoming title, though. Last month we got a look at a brand new prologue trailer, which seemed to hint at how its New York in 2094 setting will be incorporated, while six new screenshots surfaced last September. Then there was the revelation that it'll feature giant spiders... which you need to be pretty brave to check out.
