Preacher has been a long-gestating project, with attempts to get it made as a movie and TV show both floundering in the past. Most recently, Seth Rogen was rumored to be involved after he posted a hint on Twitter. And now we know he wasn't joking with those tweets.
AMC and Sony Pictures Television have announced an agreement to develop a Preacher TV series for AMC. This Is the End’s Rogen and Evan Goldberg will executive produce and write the series, with Breaking Bad’s Sam Catlin serving as showrunner and executive producer.
Based on the ‘90s Vertigo/DC comic book series of the same name, Preacher was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Both creators endorsed the planned adaptation in an AMC press release, with Ennis commenting, “Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a more natural home for the story than a 2-hour movie.” Ennis goes on to emphasize that Rogen and Goldberg "get" what Preacher is and understand the source material fully.
Preacher is a supernatural action story, following the hardened Reverend Jesse Custer. Accompanied by his ex-girlfriend and a vampire named Cassidy, he searches for God after finding out He has left heaven. The series' antagonist is Saint of Killers, a Western lone gunmen type, hell-bent on killing Jesse.
Considering the edgy content, AMC seems to be a suitable home for Preacher. And with Catlin on board as showrunner, having already worked with AMC on Breaking Bad, what more can you ask for?
What do you think about the project? Are funnymen Rogen and Goldberg good picks for Preacher?
