The Walking Dead #121 Review

STK631804All Out War has been going strong for 7 (of 12) chapters, and this newest entry sees our heroes licking their wounds after a very dastardly attack from everyone’s favorite villain, Negan. This book has been moving along at breakneck speeds since the beginning of the “war,” so it’s a pleasant surprise to get a bit of a breather here.

That said, this is The Walking Dead, and things being relatively quiet doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going well. Robert Kirkman continues to take readers on a rollercoaster ride, and just as things begin to look good for Rick Grimes and company, Kirkman throws in one monkey wrench after another.

This issue explores the consequences of said monkey wrenches, which results in an issue that is, well, kind of a bummer overall. Some of these consequences are more apparent than others, and longtime readers of this book certainly shouldn’t miss this issue (or any issue for that matter), as we get a very subtle hint at where the relationship between Rick and Carl is going. While things certainly seem dire, Kirkman teases us with the briefest hint of a silver lining.

Charlie Adlard continues to bang out these issues with all of the artistry that we’ve come to expect from him, even with the increased pace of publication. There is more than one pivotal moment that occurs in this issue, and Adlard captures them all beautifully. His realistic style never fails to shine through in this issue filled with ruination, reflection, and retreat.

Mike Logsdon is a master of Kung Fu and reading comics. Find out which one of those things is actually true by following him on Twitter and IGN!
