This Week on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS eShop (Feb. 6, 2014)

Some retail games are finally coming out on Wii U and 3DS after a long dry spell. Bravely Default is the clear headliner, releasing in stores and on the eShop February 7. After that, the 3DS RPG One Piece: Romance Dawn and the Wii U and 3DS versions of The LEGO Movie Video Game launch soon, too. On the eShop-only side of things, Retro City Rampage DX heads to 3DS and Percy’s Predicament lands on Wii U. Virtual Console is once again light, with only Ninja Gaiden, already out on 3DS VC, on Wii U Virtual Console debuting. Some great sales are still in effect, including Nintendo’s Super Indie Connection deal.

3DS Retail Games

Bravely Default ($39.99, Available February 7)

The first major 3DS game of 2014 is now (almost) out in North America. This RPG, developed by Square Enix, is essentially a Final Fantasy game in everything except the name. The spiritual successor to the DS game, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Bravely Default is an epic RPG that features some innovative twists on turn-based battling and a deep yet simple job system. You can turn off random encounters and use the Brave/Default mechanic to make those random encounters go by quicker. It even features extensive use of StreetPass and SpotPass, so if you’re hankering for some RPG goodness that can only be done on 3DS, check Bravely Default out.

One Piece: Romance Dawn ($39.99, Available February 11)

Finally, a One Piece game makes it out on 3DS in North America. This RPG puts you in control of your favorite Straw Hat Crew member as you go an adventure where you can fight notable enemies from the series and travel to familiar locales. What you do and where you go is all up to you. It covers roughly half of the manga, so if you dive into this RPG, you’ll cover a lot of ground.

The LEGO Movie Video Game ($29.99, Available February 7)

Based on the movie releasing this week, The LEGO Movie Video Game is, well, a LEGO video game based off of the new movie. You can choose from more than 90 characters (including Batman, Superman, and Gandalf), collect studs and such to earn more collectables, and follow a story that involves the heroic Emmett fending off Lord Business. You know, the movie sounds pretty good. It’s by the guys who made Clone High. Do you not know what Clone High is? Look it up. It’s very good.

3DS Original Download Games

Retro City Rampage DX ($9.99)

Retro City Rampage may have come out a while ago on other platforms, but this 3DS version is essentially the Director’s Cut. The developer made tons of tiny changes to make the game more forgiving and less frustrating. So, whether it’s your first time playing Retro City Rampage or your fifth, this is basically the definitive version of the ‘80s-themed open-world game. The premise is still “8-bit GTA” and that’s always been alluring.

Wii U Retail Games

The LEGO Movie Video Game ($49.99, Available February 7)

Based on the movie releasing this week, The LEGO Movie Video Game is, well, a LEGO video game based off of the new movie. You can choose from more than 90 characters (including Batman, Superman, and Gandalf), collect studs and such to earn more collectables, and follow a story that involves the heroic Emmett fending off Lord Business. You know, the movie sounds pretty good. It’s by the guys who made Clone High. Do you not know what Clone High is? Look it up. It’s very good.

Wii U Original Download Games

Percy’s Predicament ($5.99)

A self-described casual title, Percy’s Predicament is from Maestro Interactive and is focused on delivering a GamePad-heavy experience. You control Percy Penguin, who is trapped in a magical orb, and guide him through 80 levels across six worlds by tilting the GamePad. If you buy it now, you’ll get all of the 170 additional levels for free.

Wii U Virtual Console

Ninja Gaiden ($4.99)

Ninja Gaiden is a classic NES game that stars series ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he fights against demons and junk. This hard-as-nails side-scrolling action game is sometimes unforgiving, but luckily the Wii U Virtual Console has save states (I won’t tell if you won’t). It also features a story that was one of Chrono Trigger writer Masato Kato’s earliest works. Although Kato is also responsible for the hot garbage of a story that is Ninja Gaiden III, so your mileage may vary. Still, the gameplay is tight, even if the birds knock off a third of your health and a bullet barely hurts you. Remember, if you got this on Wii Virtual Console, you can upgrade for $1.

Sales

Super Indie Connection Sale

If you already bought or are planning to buy Toki Tori 2+, Spin the Bottle, Runner2, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, or Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition, then you can buy any of the other games for 60% off through February 13. If that wasn’t clear, I’ll break it down: Buy one of those five games (whether it’s today, tomorrow or last year) and then the other four are 60% off. Sweet deal, right?

Urban Trial Freestyle Sale

The Trials-inspired game is only $3.49 from now until February 20. Get on that if you like games where you crash a bunch but it’s still fun.

Ohno Odyssey Sale

Check out this 3DS game from Big John Games at a discounted price of $3.99 from now until February 20.

Neal Ronaghan isn’t that hyped for Bravely Default. If you want me, yell at him on Twitter and be all like “you run Nintendo World Report, why you no like Bravely Default?”
