According to a blog post from Twitch’s customer experience director Jason Maestas, Twitch Plays Pokemon is still having issues with the chat despite the use of a dedicated server. As Twitch Plays Pokemon depends entirely on the chat for game commands, having a functioning system is vital for this social experiment to work.
On February 16, Twitch moved the channel onto their dedicated event chat server that is usually reserved for large event streams such as the League Championship Series. Still, Maestas said they are experiencing “fundamental issues” with the chat infrastructure.
“When a phenomenon like TPP comes along which increases load on the system many fold, it gives us a great opportunity to discover and fix new issues and issues that only raise their head under super high load,” Twitch engineer Mike Ossareh said in a blog post.
Twitch Plays Pokemon has been running for a week and has over 17 million views. Maestas said Twitch will continue to make improvements to their chat systems as Twitch Plays Pokemon continues.
