App Store Update: February 10

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention. Our regular readers may have noticed that the App Store Update took a break last week, with no new Updates posted on Thursday or Friday. I'm not being a slacker, I promise – The reason I wasn't able to compile the ASU was that I was at the hospital welcoming my second baby boy into the world! Getting back to the normal business of the ASU, though, today's edition will get us caught up on the notable new releases that launched into the App Store while I was away – beginning with the controversial new mobile version of Final Fantasy VI:

Game Debuts

Final Fantasy VI – ($15.99)

Final Fantasy fans have been abuzz about this latest release from Square Enix's back catalog for months, as pre-release screenshots of its retouched art style caused quite an uproar. I'd personally side with those who've taken a negative point of view on this one, as I think it looks kind of ugly and gross compared to the masterpiece it once was on the SNES 20 years ago – but plenty of fans are playing through and enjoying it despite its altered art, so good for them if they can stomach it.

The Quest: Elemental Asteroids – ($2.99)

An old-school, first-person, turn-based dungeon-crawler, Elemental Asteroids is an expansion pack to The Quest standalone game and can be accessed either by updating your existing download of that game to Version 18.0 or by buying this standalone version for $2.99.

Galcon Legends – ($2.99)

An intergalactic bill collector unites the people of allied planets against the invading forces of an alien empire, then has them all attack the enemy with swarms of triangles:

Eliss Infinity – ($2.99)

This is one of those games with a trailer that's so confusing that I don't know how the gameplay works at all, yet so mesmerizing that I can't look away either:

Toast Time – ($2.99)

Previously available for Android devices, this bread-themed shoot-'em-up has now popped up in the App Store as well. Get your butter and jelly ready!

Kahuna – ($1.99)

Two rival wizards compete against one another in a chain of islands, seeing who can make the most linkages between land masses.

Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse – ($4.99)

The Broken Sword saga continues with the iOS debut of Episode 1 of its latest adventure. Take a look:

Threes! – ($1.99)

A unique and addictive new puzzler that has you sliding number tiles around to build up multiples of 3. Take a look:

Line of Defense Tactics – (Freemium)

Tactical gameplay that plays out through both squad-directing land-based missions and outer space ship-to-ship battles:

Only One – (Freemium)

Fight to be the last man standing against an ever-increasing army of enemies:

Qwirkle – ($2.99)

Finally, the excellent color- and shape-matching board game Qwirkle has now arrived in digital form. (My wife loves to play this game, though often with other friends since my eyes have a hard time seeing the difference between some of the colors.)
