Flappy Jam Launched to Show Support for Flappy Bird Creator

Independent game developers have rallied to show their support for Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen, setting up a game jam that encourages developers to produce their own Flappy-inspired games.

"Indie gamedevs are friendly and supportive," reads the description on the Flappy Jam site. "Envy and teasing should not belong to our community, nor be a cause of suffering."

This is presumably in response to the outcry that followed Nguyen's decision to remove Flappy Bird from mobile app stores, though Nguyen himself stated that he did so because its addictive gameplay made him feel "uncomfortable."

At the time of writing, nearly 50 games have already been uploaded to the Flappy Jam site. All sorts of things are currently being flappified, including bats, helicopters, beards, and Pikachus.

Among the participating developers is Terry Cavanagh, known for 2012's Super Hexagon.

Flappy Bird earned only a mediocre rating in our review, but we recognised its highly addictive potential; it reportedly earned Nguyen ridiculous sums of money through its in-game advertising. Though Nguyen says it's unlikely Flappy Bird will ever be re-released, he will continue to make games.
