NBC has cast the main character in their Constantine pilot, based on the DC Comic. Deadline reports that Welsh actor Matt Ryan (whose credits include Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV) will play the snarky detective. As established in DC Comics, Constantine -- first portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the Constantine movie -- is a bit of a curmudgeonly antihero. He hunts the supernatural and keeps humans safe, but he doesn't exactly wake up in the morning feeling excited to save the day.
Darker hair aside, Ryan definitely has the right look to portray the character. Perhaps the hair will change, as Deadline does mention the blue collar Constantine has "scruffy blond hair" and will of course don the requisite trench coat. (Maybe they'll include a crossover episode with Supernatural where Constantine and Castiel go shopping for new coats together.) Unlike the film, the TV version will keep the character British.
Constantine's pilot was written by Daniel Cerone (Dexter) and David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel), and Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) has been tapped to direct. The initial story will show Constantine getting roped into doing the good and right thing after a late friend's daughter is targeted by demons.
