Gary Oldman Details Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Story

Potential spoilers follow!

During an interview about his role in the RoboCop remake, Gary Oldman dropped a few plot details regarding the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Oldman told MTV that his character, Dreyfus, is a former cop elected to lead a human community "lucky enough to survive the flu, the disease and ensuing social uprising" after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The survivors, desperate for electrical power, eventually find a power station that may or may not still be operational. They also "discover that there's a whole community of apes living there. We believed that they were all completely fire-bombed and wiped out."

The Dark Knight actor also explains that Dreyfus is driven by "great loss," and that he sees him as "a sort of hero of the piece." Though when it comes to the apes, "there's only one answer for him: Wipe them out."

Oldman probably won't use a Bat signal in Apes.

Oldman credits director Matt Reeves for making Dawn "more of a human story" and creating relatable characters.

"He wanted to explore what had happened," explains Oldman, "and keep it more focused on the human side of it, before the story becomes the Planet of the Apes as we know it from the original."

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes swings into theaters May 23, 2014.
