Warners Green Light a Sequel to The LEGO Movie Before Its Release

Even though it doesn’t come out until this weekend, Warner Bros. has reportedly already begun work on a sequel to The LEGO Movie. The decision is based on market research that anticipates a monster $40 million+ opening weekend for the animated comedy.

In his review earlier today, IGN’s Daniel Krupa gave The Lego Movie high praise, calling it “bizarre, colourful, optimistic, frequently hilarious, and perhaps most surprisingly, genuinely touching.” It tells the tale of an average minifig named Emmett who gets caught up in an adventure, the outcome of which will decide the fate of the LEGO universe. Along the way he meets up with licensed characters such as Batman as well as original creations designed specifically for the film.

The script for The LEGO Movie was written by 21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, but the sequel will be penned by Jared Stern who, along with Vince Vaughn, co-wrote the comedy The Internship.

Warner Bros. hasn’t commented on the reason behind the switch but according to The Wrap, all three writers are part of a vaguely sinister sounding "creative consortium of top-notch writers and directors Warner Bros. created to foster new animated projects,” which also includes Muppets writer/director Nicholas Stoller and Bad Santa writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

The LEGO Movie opens February 7.
